The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) is a Group of Flag States and classification societies. Their aim is to bridge the gap between the technology and regulatory processes. With safety in mind, they have developed a set of guidelines to help the maritime industry decarbonise.

Exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) – more commonly referred to as scrubbers – are an accepted equivalent measure in complying with the IMO 2020 global sulphur cap. The use of scrubbers has split the shipping industry. Ports around the world continue to look at the impact of scrubber use in their waters.

Amendments to MARPOL Annex VI Appendix IX enter into force on 1 August 2025 that require ships to collect and report additional fuel oil consumption data in a calendar year.

The IMO has published a joint circular updating the fuel oil sampling guidelines for compliance verification with MARPOL Annex VI and SOLAS Chapter II-2.

MSC-MEPC.2/Circ.18, issued on 11 July 2024, extends the use of the MARPOL Delivered Sample to also be available for checking the flashpoint requirement under SOLAS Regulation II-2/4.2.1.

This joint circular revokes the previous MEPC Resolution 182(59) titled “2009 Guidelines for the sampling of fuel oil for determination of compliance with the revised MARPOL Annex VI”.

From 1 January 2025, new restrictions will be applied to ships regarding the discharge of garbage, oil, and oily mixtures within the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Special Areas.
